- Accessibility: The hose reel should be located in a place easily reachable — near exits, along corridors, stairwell lobbies, etc. It should not be blocked by stored items, furniture, or parked vehicles.
- Height: The control handle or valve should be at a usable height for most people — generally around 1.2‑1.5 meters from finished floor level, so it’s reachable.
- Signage & Visibility: Proper signage indicating “Fire Hose Reel” must be placed, visible even in low light. In case of recesses or cabinets, glass or breakable enclosures may be used.
- Water Supply: Must be connected to a reliable source. Water pressure & flow should be sufficient under load. Also, piping should be adequate, no sharp bends that restrict flow.
- Protection from Damage: Hose reel components must be protected from physical damage, rust, weather (if outdoors), and unauthorized use. Use covers or recessed cabinets if needed.
- Testing & Maintenance: Annual testing of hose reel systems is a must: check hose condition, nozzle working, drum operation, water pressure, and throw. After installation, commissioning and periodic inspections should be documented.
